FCO video - Using your EHIC in Spain

Transcript:

Information regarding your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). When you travel to Spain it is important that you apply for an EHIC in order to be treated under the public health system in case of public, medically necessary care. It is also important that you get travel insurance when you travel to Spain, as an EHIC does not cover everything. For more information on the European Health Insurance Card, please visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-in-spain-including-the-balearic-and-canary-islands

Brexit and the EHIC:

Please note that your EHIC will remain valid until the end of the transition period, 31 December 2020.

If you are travelling to a country within the EU after 2020, the EHIC will no longer be valid for most UK citizens. Government advice states that you should buy travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go on holiday, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition.

The EHIC will still be valid beyond 2020 for UK state pensioners living in the EU before the end of 2020, for UK students who start a course in the EU before the end of 2020 up until their course finishes, and for frontier workers - those who work in one state and live in another.

Testimonials

Our concerns about buying a property in Spain were not being able to speak the language or understand Spanish law. E&G Solicitors in Spain were fantastic - highly professional and knowledgeable! They explained everything clearly and took control of the process, with very little intervention required by us. The teams in both Spain and the UK worked very well with each other.
